Running with wild horses in Kayseri, Cappadocia

One night we travelled out of Göreme to see more of Cappadocia—we left the town and drove west towards Kayseri until we got to the foothills of Mount Erciyes.
Cappadocia has become incredibly well known over the last few decades for the beautiful hot air balloons that fill the valley each morning (with such good reason). Horses have been at the heart of the region for centuries, from Persian currency to Roman chariot racing and Ottoman cavalry.
We were worried that we wouldn’t be able to make it to these mountains that evening—there were huge winds and thunderstorms passing through, and the morning balloons and been cancelled for days.
We didn’t want the storm to dampen the night as well, but it luckily cleared on the drive up, and as soon as we arrived at the field we were lost for words.
Out in the valley, hundreds of horses passed through as the sun set. We could feel the whole ground shake as they kicked the dust up around them.
We kept still as the entire herd parted around us. This was the view across the backs.
